There are several basic technology tools that every REALTOR® should have to advance his business, according to Michael Antoniak, a professional freelance writer and frequent contributor to REALTOR® magazine.

“I’ve been covering technology since 1993 and it’s always surprising that the majority of REALTORS® are slow to adopt technology,” Antoniak said. “Technology is intimidating to a lot of people.” So he’s written an ebook A Guide to Essential Technology for Mobile Professionals that has the advice on all that’s available to save time, boost productivity and improve client services in the field.

“Real estate is one of today’s most highly mobile careers but even many successful or aspiring agents and brokers need some guidance figuring out which are the right tools and technologies for them,” he noted.

Must-have basics for REALTORS®, according to Antoniak, include:

  • Smart phone – These have a lot of functionality for a mobile professional.
  • Computer – You need some type of computer, whether it’s a netbook, notebook or laptop.
  • Contact management system – This is essential for tracking your clients and leads.
  • Digital camera – While a phone may have a camera, the quality isn’t as good as a separate camera. The good news is that prices are coming down and these are very affordable.
  • GPS – An essential tool for REALTORS® today. The phone application may not work the best while you’re driving.

A companion web site was created for the book and gives some general information. A Guide to Essential Technology for Mobile Professionals is available now as a PDF download for $7.99 at RealTechTools.com.

I’m with Melanie. When the new agents I teach or mentor ask me what they need the list starts with a smartphone and a digital camera. Not only do we need all the tools mentioned but we need to spend time learning how to use them to their fullest. I’m in a learning curve right now with my new Blackberry Bold–upgraded from the Pearl. I try to find or do something new everyday.

These are as basic today as the manual typewriter, dial phone, and drawer full of carbon paper were for my Mom, when she opened her real estate office–in 1964! We’ve come a long way, baby!
