Social MediaAsk Meghan: Time to check out Twitter?
Question: I’ve been on Facebook for a few months now. Is it time to check out Twitter?
Answer: In my opinion, you should sign up for Twitter to control your brand’s identity (personal and/or company brand). Even if you don’t plan to use your account soon, reserve your online identity in this space much like experts advise you to reserve your name as a domain name (web site address like JohnSmith.com).

It only takes a few minutes to create an account. As I mentioned in my last column, you can use Twitter to update your Facebook status as a timesaver too.
I read an article on CNNMoney.com recently that said, “Twitter may be a fast-growing social network, but most of its 50 million accounts merely follow other users rather than posting their own messages.” I fall into this category. I use Twitter more as a news source than to interact with others using the service. If I see something I think my followers would also want to read, I click the “retweet” button but I rarely add my own status updates.
Should you check out Twitter? Absolutely. Start following your favorite real estate news source (PARJustListed.com has an account), news anchors, brands, celebrities, etc. Do a search for your company’s name to see what others are saying about you. You may find yourself retweeting, writing your own tweets, simply following others or you may get bored after a few days and abandon your account. Whichever category you fall in, at least you took the time to find out what everyone’s talking about and reserved your name in another popular online social network.
