Real Estate licensees have until May 31 to renew licenses with the PA State Real Estate Commission.

Deputy Commissioner Mark Vessella with the Department of State’s Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs says licensees should renew shortly after receiving renewal cards in the mail. Vessella adds 91 percent of licensees usually renew online. “It’s quick and easy and you will get your license within seven business days,” he said.

    @Suzanne:

    1. You’re absolutely right – a licensee who does not renew by May 31 CANNOT practice real estate until he/she renews.

    2. There is a check-box on the application where the licensee must acknowledge whether or not they have completed their 14 hours CE. If they want to renew early and haven’t completed their CE yet, they must complete the application honestly and check “no.” Once they’ve completed the CE, the licensee should send an email to st-realestate@state.pa.us. The email should include licensee’s name and license number as well as a statement letting the Real Estate Commission know that they answered “No” to the CE question on the renewal and that they have now completed the CE.

    Another great resource for agents re: license renewal is the State Real Estate Commission’s latest newsletter. Their Education Administrator, Katie Douglas, answers many of the frequently asked questions (including the two above).

    Mr. Vessella’s comments are informative to a point. Two things not mentioned are : if the license is not renewed by 31 May, then my understanding is that the licensee may not practice real estate until his license IS renewed. Secondly, my understanding is that licensees ARE NOT to renew until they have taken their 14 hours of CE. My concerns are that after listening to this pod cast, agents who have not completed their CE will re-license now instead of waiting to complete their classes and/or agents who don’t meet the deadline will think they have a 30 “grace” period to perform real estate activities without having renewed. Just a couple of thoughts!
