Ask Meghan: Prevent spam comments

Question: I have a blog but am constantly being bombarded with spam comments. What can I do to prevent this?

Example of a CAPTCHA box

Answer: You need a CAPTCHA program for your blog. A CAPTCHA program places a box on the comments page (or registration form) with distorted text. The user must type in the letters seen in the box in order to place a comment. The spam comments come from bots which are automated programs that “attack” your site. Bots cannot read the distorted text and therefore the CAPTCHA codes prevent spam on your blog.

PARJustListed.com is programmed by WordPress.org and I have the free SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam plug-in installed to prevent spam comments.

Another service I recommend (which is also free) is ReCAPTCHA.net.

Tom, I looked at the site and your recommendation page and do not see a CAPTCHA code on this site. Do other agents have the CAPTCHA code on theirs? If there is no CAPTCHA code it should make it easier for clients to leave a testimonial. The reason people have CAPTCHA codes is to eliminate bots from sending continuous spam on forms.

I have been signed up with a company Incredibleagents.com for a while. When logged in they allow for cleints to post testimonials but there is a CAPTCHA code box which will not display when I log ion or when my clients log in. This tends to make the willing clients who would like to give a testimonial a bad taste. Have you heard of this company, and/or is there something blocking the Catcha code from working on my and all my clients machines?
