Protect your privacy on Facebook

New Facebook changes mean new questions about protecting pictures and other personal information. Yes, the new layout is confusing and doesn’t allow you to see who your friends recently became friends with in your news feed, but one positive thing is the emphasis on Friend Lists.

At the top of your Facebook page, click Friends. On the left hand side of the page, you’ll see “Friend Lists”. Click the “Make a New List” button. It will ask you to name your list (Work friends, Neighbors, Family, etc.) After you create the list, add your friends to it by either typing in their names in the “Add to List” field or use the “Select Multiple Friends” option.

Using your pictures as an example, to allow only certain friends or Friend Lists to see your photo album:

• Click “Create a photo album”
• Choose Privacy: Who can see this?Facebook
• Click Customize
• Under Friends, choose “Some Friends”
• Either type in the name of friends you want to be able to see it or the list name
• Under Networks, choose “None of my networks”

Note: The Networks piece of this is important. It defaults to “All of my networks”, making your Friend Lists irrelevant because everyone on your networks could see your photos, even if you aren’t friends with them.

Friend Lists make it possible to only allow the friend(s) you choose to see your pictures, videos, status updates and more. They are also easy to create:
