Gen X, Gen Y: Web site as indoor plumbing

To Gen X’ers and Gen Y’ers, a REALTOR® web site is like indoor plumbing: you just expect it to be there. Who said this? According to some handwritten notes I found in my desk drawer last week, it was former NAR economist John Tuccillo at the 2007 NAR annual meeting. (I was going to throw the notes away but I thought I’d share them with you, dear reader.)

Tuccillo observed that with Gen X and Gen Y clients entering the marketplace in droves, traditional REALTOR® business models are changing. In this new arena, it’s all about the deal – and the customer, says Tuccillo.

“Technology mastery is essential,” he added.  ”Your web site should be a one-stop shop for customers. You need to reach out to customers one-to-one. Find out where your clients get their information.”

Now, a little more than a year later, there are more online tools than ever – sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.  More than 500 PAR members have joined our Facebook group to date and nearly 300 are a part of our LinkedIn group. If you haven’t joined, it’s not too late. And it’s not too difficult. Just go to facebook.com and linkedin.com and get started.
