President Obama signs homebuyer tax credit bill

The law extends the present $8,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers through April 30, 2010. Current homeowners are eligible for a $6,500 tax credit through April 30, provided they have lived in the home they are selling, or have sold, as the principal residence for five consecutive years during the past eight years.

With only a few weeks left until the first-time homebuyer tax credit expires, the Senate voted yesterday to extend and expand it through April 2010. On Thursday, the House voted 403-12 in favor of the bill. It could go to President Obama's desk for his signature as early as Friday.
